Many of you are aware that Lizzy and I devour audio books while we travel. Many times they're histories or biographies about the places we visit. Sometimes they're social, political or philosophical. And...as often as not they are about diet and health. Today's title, "How Not to Die," couldn't be more diametrically opposed to yesterday's, "The Great Cholesterol Myth." Seriously, both books are written by doctors and yet they must both be living on separate planets and referencing completely different species. I'd say neither are diet books; rather they are lifestyle books based upon scientific studies about our bodies and how they were designed to be nourished. Yet, they must have been preforming autopsies on entirely different subjects.
Yesterday's convincing author had us stopping into The Big Texan in Amarillo for a nice, juicy, high-fat rib-eye steak. His premise is that cholesterol gets a bad wrap because our bodies literally run on the stuff, especially or brains. To cheat the body out of cholesterol is like depriving a new baby of mother's milk (or so his story goes).
Today's learned doc and nutritionist convinced us that the flesh of any animal (especially chickens) is a VIP pass to an early demise. So, naturally, tonight we dined at a vegan restaurant.
Tomorrow we're taking a break and listening to Bill Bryson as he travels through Australia. Hopefully, he won't have any opinions on lifestyle or cuisine.
